WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED?:
- You should read this if you want to know how to get over the fear of starting a business because uncertainty and fear of failure have kept you paralyzed and unable to go for the life you want.
Fear is normal when embarking on something new, like starting a business. Some of the common fears that people experience are fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of criticism, even fear of success.
Author Stephen King once admitted that he still fears failure after all these years. And apparently, Abraham Lincoln and J.K. Rowling both suffered from stage fright, just to name a few. So if you’re experiencing any of these, you’re in good company. But everyone who has gone on to succeed has managed to do so despite their fear.
So the question is: “How can you get over your fears so you can get on with starting an online business and building the life of your dreams?” Well, let’s consider a few things.
Napoleon Hill said, “Most great people have attained their greatest success just one step beyond their greatest failure.” Take Bill Gates for instance, his first company was a complete failure. James Dyson, the inventor of the Dyson vacuum cleaner, had to try 5,127 prototypes before he got it right.
Of course, these are just a couple of examples, but the journey of every successful person teaches us that failure is part of the experience. Learning what doesn’t work is a part of learning what does.
So just because things aren’t going as smoothly as you’d like, don’t give up. You have to keep going or you’ll never get to your greatest success.
Experimenting Takes The Pressure Off
Since you now know you’re going to fail and are expecting it, there’s a shift in perspective that can make things easier for you. Treat starting a business as an experiment.
When scientists perform experiments, they’re not afraid to fail. They approach their work with a kind of curiosity. They have an idea about something that might work or might be true (a hypothesis). Then they try some things out to learn what works and where they were right. If they were wrong, they take note of what they might need to adjust, then they try again. Easy peasy.
When you learn that failure in business isn’t the end of the world, rather just one round of experiments, it makes it easier to learn from what went wrong, make adjustments, then try again.
Love Your Customers
After you overcome the fear of starting, at some point you’ll experience the frustration of building. However, when you go into business with the aim of serving others, it will benefit both you and your customers.
To do that, you really need to fall in love with the group of people that your business serves. Fall in love with helping them succeed. When you have a genuine fondness for your target audience, you’ll make sure that the work you’re doing is going to improve their lives in some way. The thought of that will make you both happy and proud.
When you know that your work will make the difference for those people that you care about, guess what else happens? Fear and frustration will no longer be strong enough to stop you because love is stronger than fear. Love for your customers and a sincere desire to help them succeed will pull you through the tough and scary times.
Sit Back And Enjoy The Ride
Sometimes we don’t start because we can’t see the destination. We’re afraid of all the unknowns that could pop up between where we are and where we want to be. Because we don’t know how we’ll handle these roadblocks when they come, we stay put in the safety of our comfort zone.
But building a business is a lot like taking a trip by car. We put our current location and our desired destination in the navigation to get the directions we should take to reach our goal. But sometimes, things come up along the way and we have to reroute.
But when you think about it, we started out on this journey, not being able to physically see the destination up ahead, not knowing ahead of time if obstacles would require that we make adjustments in our course, and not worrying about how we’d handle those adjustments if they came.
Starting your online business is just like that. You map out a reasonable plan, get started on your journey, and re-route whenever necessary.
But just know that just like your car trip, getting to your destination is not going to be a straight line. There will be lots of turns, ups and downs, and maybe even twists. If you ask any successful person they’ll tell you, that’s just what the road to success looks like.
Sure, you don’t know what will happen once you get started. But you do know what will happen if you don’t start. You’ll never reach the destination. You’ll never get to your greatest success. You’ll never live your dreams.
